Our Beginnings
Storied Places® was born in response to a growing demand for fractional vacation home ownership, a concept that is priced proportionate to actual use.
“People were looking for a mountain home comparable to their primary residence in terms of size, quality, comfort and enjoyment, but few found it practical to tie up a large amount of capital in a place they might only use a few week a year, nor to expend the time and energy required to manage and maintain a large second home.”
Steve Laver, President Storied Places
Intrawest saw a potential model in the growth of fractional ownership, which was gaining popularity as a way to sensibly own a corporate jet. Owners bought a fraction, flew like royalty when they needed to, and paid a relatively small part of the jet’s cost and maintenance.
Using the fractional ownership model as a base, Intrawest incorporated expertise from its resort business and built the first Storied Places in Whistler. “At Nature’s Door” was designed to be unparalleled: a large mountain home experience in a spectacular location, with inspired architecture and exquisite interior design – an extraordinary residence that would cost owners less than the deposit, property dues and taxes ordinarily required to own such a home outright. The fractional ownership model also meant that there would be none of the maintenance worries typically associated with second home ownership, and it offered flexible usage – the amount of access they needed and wanted.
